In 1894 Britain made Uganda a protectorate and on October 9, 1962
it became independent to join the Commonwealth a year later. In
1967 the king was abolished and replaced by centralized
government. In 1971, General Idi Amin seized power and over
300,000 opponents were killed in the following years. In 1976,
Amin was named President for life. In 1972 he expelled all
Asians and in 1973 the U.S. withdrew all diplomatic persons.
From 1978 to 1979, Uganda and Tanzania fought a recurring boarder
war resulting in the overthrow of the Amin government. The U.S.
has since reopened its embassy and reinstated economic aid.
